If an Amazon delivery truck or van hurt you or someone you love in Sunrise, your next steps matter. Get medical care. Protect the evidence. Learn the Florida deadlines that apply. This guide explains what to do after an Amazon truck accident in Sunrise and Broward County. It also explains how a lawyer can help sort out who may be responsible.
Amazon Delivery Trucks on Sunrise Roads
Amazon delivery trucks and vans share Sunrise streets, commercial corridors and highways. They travel alongside commuters, school traffic, cyclists and people on foot.
On a Florida Panthers game night, traffic in Sunrise can get dense fast. A heavy truck in that mix raises the stakes for everyone nearby.
The Sawgrass Expressway and Interstate 75 (I-75) carry heavy traffic near Sunrise. Large trucks need more distance to stop and turn. Their loads can also shift. When a crash happens, the force involved is far greater than in a typical car collision.
News outlets have reported on Amazon trucks in serious crashes. One 2024 report described a pedestrian struck by an Amazon truck in Sunrise. Stories like this show how quickly an ordinary delivery run can become an emergency.

The First Steps After an Amazon Truck Crash
Get medical care first. Then call 911 so police respond to the scene.
Some injuries are not obvious right after a crash. An exam matters even if you feel shaken but okay. Follow your doctors’ instructions. Keep every appointment.
Florida law requires a written crash report when a crash causes death, personal injury or any complaint of pain or discomfort. The investigating officer must complete and submit that report within 10 days after the investigation is finished (§ 316.066). Before you leave, write down the officer’s name and the report number.
Next, document the scene. Take these photos and notes if you can:
- The truck’s markings and company name
- Any delivery service partner name
- The license plate and the driver’s name, if visible
- Vehicle damage, road conditions and skid marks
- Any cargo spilled on the pavement
Ask witnesses for their names and phone numbers. People move on quickly after a crash.
Then keep records. Save medical bills, visit notes, missed-work details, mileage and receipts for out-of-pocket costs. Think carefully before posting about the crash online. Insurers and other parties can read public posts and photos.
Who May Be Responsible When an Amazon Truck Is Involved
More than one party may share responsibility after an Amazon truck crash. That can include the driver. It can also include the business that hired the driver and the company that owns or leases the vehicle.
Many Amazon routes run through independent delivery service partners. These are separate businesses that employ their own drivers. So the employer may not be Amazon itself.
Federal truck-safety rules give investigators specific questions to ask:
- A commercial driver may not drive after 14 consecutive hours that begin after coming on duty following 10 consecutive hours off duty (49 CFR § 395.3).
- Under 49 C.F.R. § 392.80, no driver may engage in texting while driving, and no motor carrier may allow or require its drivers to do so. The section includes an emergency exception: texting while driving is permissible when necessary to communicate with law enforcement officials or other emergency services (49 CFR § 392.80).
- Cargo must be secured. It cannot leak, spill, blow or fall off the vehicle (49 CFR § 393.100).
As soon as practicable after a crash involving a commercial motor vehicle operating on a public road in commerce that takes a life, federal rules require the employer to test each of its surviving drivers who was performing safety-sensitive functions with respect to the vehicle for alcohol and controlled substances (49 CFR § 382.303).
Responsibility depends on the facts. An early review of the crash report, vehicle records and driver logs can show who may have had a role.
Florida Deadlines and Fault Rules That Apply
Florida generally gives two years to file a lawsuit based on negligence (§ 95.11). This deadline applies to your case. Acting early keeps your options open.
Florida also divides fault by percentage. Under § 768.81, the court enters judgment against each party based on that party’s share of fault. In plain words, each at-fault party answers for its own share. This is not joint and several liability, where one party could be held responsible for the whole amount. If you share some of the blame, that share can change what you recover.
If a crash causes a death, Florida’s wrongful death law (§ 768.19) applies. It says the person who would have been liable if the injured person had lived can be liable for damages.
Insurance policies have their own notice and claim steps. Keep every letter, claim number and policy document you receive.

Serious Injuries From Large-Truck and Runaway Truck Crashes
Large-truck crashes can cause catastrophic injuries that change daily life. These can include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Spinal cord injuries that may lead to paralysis
- Amputations
- Severe burns
- Serious back and neck injuries
Some of these injuries need long-term care.
Overturned and runaway trucks can strike cars, pedestrians and cyclists nearby. One crash can grow into a multi-vehicle collision. That collision can hurt people who were not part of the first impact.
Recovery can involve long-term medical care and rehabilitation. It can also involve changes to a home and lost ability to earn a living. Follow your doctors’ care plan. Keep a written record of each treatment and each limit on your daily life.
When a crash takes a life, the family may have rights under the wrongful death law described above. The goal is to protect the family’s financial security. It is also to give them room to grieve and move forward. Families in this position often have many decisions to make at once. They do not have to make them alone.

Talk With Our Team About an Amazon Truck Crash
How long do I have to file a lawsuit after an Amazon truck crash in Florida?
Florida generally gives two years to file a lawsuit based on negligence (Fla. Stat. § 95.11). Deadlines apply. That is why speaking with a lawyer early is important.
Can I still pursue a claim if I was partly at fault?
Florida divides fault by percentage. Your share of fault can affect what you recover. A lawyer can review the facts of your crash with you.
How can I get the crash report?
Under Fla. Stat. § 316.066(2)(a), crash reports held by an agency that reveal the identity, phone numbers, addresses or other personal information of the people involved are confidential and exempt from public records access for 60 days after the report is filed. During that period, access is limited to certain people, including the parties involved, their legal representatives and their insurers, who must provide the sworn statement described in § 316.066(2)(d). Ask the agency that investigated the crash for the report number.
Can a family sue after a fatal truck crash in Florida?
Florida’s wrongful death law allows claims when a death is caused by negligence or a wrongful act. A lawyer can review the facts with the family and explain the options.

What to Do in the Days After an Amazon Truck Crash
1. Get medical care right away
Some injuries, including head and back injuries, may not show symptoms for hours or days. Get checked by a doctor and follow your doctors' care plan.
2. Document the scene
If you can, take photos of the vehicles, the road, visible injuries, and any signs or markings on the delivery truck. Write down the time, weather, and names of witnesses.
3. Keep every record
Save police reports, medical bills, prescriptions, receipts, and pay stubs. Track missed work and how the injury affects your daily life.
4. Talk with a lawyer before you give statements
Delivery truck claims can involve the driver, a delivery service, or other companies. Speak with our team before giving a recorded statement to any insurance company.
Important: Do Not Wait
Insurance companies may contact you soon after a crash and ask for recorded statements or quick settlements. Early statements can affect your claim. Speaking with a lawyer first helps protect your rights while you focus on recovery.
