Yes, a federal social media addiction MDL exists. It is called MDL No. 3047, and it is pending in federal court in California. For Florida families, it is important background, but it does not decide any one family’s claim.
If you are a parent or relative trying to understand what this means for a child or teen, this page explains the case in plain language. It also explains what to do next.
Yes: A Federal Social Media Addiction MDL Exists
A federal social media addiction MDL exists under the name In re Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation. It is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The court’s case page lists the MDL, its federal venue, and the parties.
The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) sent the cases to one federal court for pretrial work. Its transfer order for MDL 3047 says the cases share common factual questions.
Court dockets change over time. Check the court’s case page for current status. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers presides over the MDL.

What an MDL Is, in Plain Language
An MDL, or multidistrict litigation, is how federal courts handle many similar lawsuits at once. Separate cases filed in different places are sent to one judge. That judge manages the pretrial steps.
Those steps include discovery (the exchange of records and information), motions, and scheduling. The judge works through these questions for all the cases together.
An MDL is not one big trial. Each case keeps its own plaintiff and its own claims. Cases that are not resolved in pretrial may later return to the courts where they were filed.
An MDL is also not a class action. In a class action, a group moves forward as one. In an MDL, each person’s claim is still that person’s own claim.
What the Consolidated Cases Allege
The lawsuits allege that social media platforms were designed to encourage addictive use by young people. They also allege that the companies failed to warn about harm to minors. The JPML order describes these as claims in the litigation.
These are allegations. They have not been proven in court. The companies named in these cases can raise their own legal defenses, and the court decides which claims move forward.
Parents should keep this difference in mind. An allegation is a claim someone has made. A proven fact is something a court has decided. News coverage often blurs the two, so check the court record itself.
What the MDL Means for Florida Families
Every claim depends on its own facts and circumstances. A family may have options in a Florida state court or in federal court. The MDL is one part of a wider legal picture, not the whole of it.
Florida law sets deadlines for filing personal injury claims, so contacting the firm promptly is important. Deadlines apply to every case. The timing can be complicated when the injured person is a minor, so contact a lawyer promptly.
Florida also divides fault by percentage. Under Fla. Stat. § 768.81, in a negligence action the court enters judgment against each party based on that party’s percentage of fault.
Being in the public MDL does not by itself mean a family is included in any settlement. It also does not mean a family will receive a payment.

Mental Health Harms Alleged in These Lawsuits
The lawsuits describe serious harms to children and teens. These include depression, anxiety, eating disorders, sleep problems, and, in some cases, self-harm or suicidal thoughts. The lawsuits link these harms to how the platforms were designed.
These are allegations, and they are serious. Hillsborough County, Florida also publishes guidance on signs of mental-health difficulties in children and teens linked to social media and technology use.

Records Parents Can Start Gathering Now
Families often start by gathering records. Useful records may include account and screen-time histories, medical and counseling records, and school messages about your child’s wellbeing.
Write a timeline of changes you noticed, with dates. Note sleep changes, shifts in friendships, school struggles, and what treatment was recommended and when.
Keep originals. Do not delete accounts, posts, or messages while you seek advice, because deleted material can be hard to recover and harder to explain later.
No record can predict a result. Records help a lawyer understand what happened, and that understanding is the purpose of gathering them.
