Example: &#8220;a high-speed truck crash is liable to cause a spinal cord injury.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>&#8220;Liable&#8221;<\/strong> on its own is a legal term. It means <em>legally responsible<\/em>. Example: &#8220;the trucking company was found liable for the crash.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some readers want the medical facts. They want to know which injuries are likely to leave someone paralyzed. They travel down the spinal cord and out to your muscles. The spinal cord is the main cable. When it&#8217;s damaged, signals can&#8217;t get through. Those rarely cause lasting paralysis. Treating them as if they do only muddies the picture.<\/p>\n<p>The injuries truly likely to leave someone paralyzed are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spinal cord injuries<\/strong> \u2014 the leading cause of traumatic paralysis. Insurers and juries rely on how the injury was written up. Doctors call a spinal cord injury <strong>complete<\/strong> (no movement or feeling below the injury) or <strong>incomplete<\/strong> (some signals still get through). They may also use <strong>flaccid<\/strong> (muscles go limp) and <strong>spastic<\/strong> (muscles tighten and jerk).<\/p>\n<p>The standard grading tool is the <strong>ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS)<\/strong>. It is part of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI). This is published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/asia-spinalinjury.org\/international-standards-neurological-classification-sci-isncsci\/\">American Spinal Injury Association<\/a>. D shows more usable strength than C.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AIS E<\/strong> \u2014 normal function on testing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why does this matter to a family? The ASIA grade and the neurological <em>level<\/em> of injury are key medical records. They document how severe and permanent the injury is. A well-built claim ties that record to the lifelong care the injury will require.<\/p>\n<h2>Accidents and events that commonly lead to paralysis<\/h2>\n<p>Most traumatic paralysis comes from sudden, forceful events. Many of them are preventable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Truck and serious vehicle crashes.<\/strong> A fully loaded tractor-trailer can weigh up to 80,000 pounds under federal limits. It is a type of premises-liability law \u2014 the law about safety on someone&#8217;s property. The key question is whether the attack was <em>foreseeable<\/em>. People with incomplete injuries (an AIS B, C, or D, above) sometimes regain some movement or feeling. This can come through treatment and rehabilitation. But outcomes vary widely.
