Many families ask this question after a diagnosis like this. The short answer: quadriplegic means paralysis, or loss of movement, in all four limbs. That means both arms and both legs. It usually affects the trunk, too.

What Does Quadriplegic Mean?

Quadriplegic describes a person with paralysis in all four limbs. It usually includes the trunk. Paralysis means the body cannot move a part of itself the way it normally would.

Quadriplegia most often follows damage to the spinal cord in the neck area. Doctors call this area the cervical spine. MedlinePlus explains that spinal cord injury can cause paralysis or weakness below the level of the injury. Neck-level injuries affect the arms and legs.

Think of the spinal cord as a main cable. It carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body. When that cable is damaged in the neck, messages to the arms, legs, and trunk can be disrupted.

You will often see this word in hospital charts, medical reports, and insurance letters. Doctors use it to describe where the injury sits and what the body may be able to do. That picture can change over time. Ask the treating team to explain what the report means for your loved one.

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — the first consultation is free, confidential, and carries no obligation.

Get a free consultation

Get a free consultation

Quadriplegia, Tetraplegia, and Paralysis: How They Connect

Quadriplegia and tetraplegia mean the same condition. Tetraplegia is the term used more often in medical and international settings. The World Health Organization notes that in tetraplegia, arm function is affected.

Paralysis is the broad term. It means loss of movement. Quadriplegia is one specific form of paralysis. It affects all four limbs.

Paraplegia is the contrast. A person with paraplegia has paralysis in the legs and trunk. Arm function is preserved, according to the WHO fact sheet.

The difference comes down to level. A lower injury on the spinal cord usually spares the arms. A neck-level injury reaches them.

Doctors use these labels to describe the injury level and which functions may be affected. Two people with the same label can still have very different daily abilities. Your loved one’s doctors can explain what these terms mean for their case.

Complete and Incomplete Quadriplegia

Complete quadriplegia means no movement or sensation below the level of injury.

Incomplete quadriplegia means some movement or sensation remains below the injury.

MedlinePlus notes that doctors make this same distinction between complete and incomplete spinal cord injury.

<details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you feel pain as a quadriplegic?

Some people with quadriplegia have some feeling below the injury. That can include pain. How much feeling a person has depends on the injury. Pain care is a question for the treating doctors, who can assess each person.
</details><details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can you walk after an incomplete spinal cord injury?

Recovery varies widely from person to person. It depends on the type and location of the injury. Some people regain some function over time. Following the rehabilitation plan set by the medical team matters most. No one can promise a specific result.
</details>

Common Causes and Why They Matter for Families

Most quadriplegia begins with a traumatic injury. This means a sudden blow or force to the neck or back. MedlinePlus notes that spinal cord injury can result from trauma, such as a car accident. Crashes involving cars, motorcycles, and trucks are common examples. Falls and acts of violence can cause these injuries too.

Not every case comes from an accident. Some come from illness or disease that affects the spinal cord. Doctors work out the cause through testing and medical records.

The cause matters beyond medicine. When another person’s carelessness caused the injury, that person or company may be responsible. Florida law also decides how fault is shared.

Under § 768.81, in a negligence action to which the statute applies, a party found more than 50 percent at fault for their own harm may not recover damages. This rule does not apply to an action for personal injury or wrongful death arising out of medical negligence under chapter 766.

Florida also sets deadlines for filing injury lawsuits under § 95.11.
