This one is written from the perspective of a Florida Bar\u2013admitted attorney at CHG Personal Injury Lawyers who works with families after catastrophic spinal cord injuries. A catastrophic spinal cord injury changes life for everyone, not just the injured person. If you’ve suddenly become a caregiver, the feelings of fear and exhaustion are normal.<\/p>\n

You are not alone. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation<\/a> estimates that about 5.4 million people in the U.S. live with some form of paralysis\u2014roughly 1 in 50. Spinal cord injury specifically affects an estimated 302,000 people nationwide, per the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC)<\/a>. The families we work with consistently tell us the first months are the hardest, and that routines get easier with practice.<\/p>\n

Understanding Your Loved One’s Level of Injury<\/h2>\n

The level of a spinal cord injury shapes almost every part of daily care. Higher injuries affect more of the body.<\/p>\n

Paraplegia<\/strong> affects the lower body and legs. Quadriplegia<\/strong> (tetraplegia) affects all four limbs and the trunk. Injuries in the neck (cervical spine, C1\u2013C8) cause quadriplegia; injuries lower down cause paraplegia, per the Mayo Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Complete vs. Incomplete Injuries<\/h3>\n

Doctors grade injuries using the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI)<\/strong> from the American Spinal Injury Association<\/a>. This scale runs from ASIA A<\/strong> (complete\u2014no motor or sensory function below the injury) through ASIA D and E<\/strong> (increasing function). When you talk with the care team, ask for your loved one’s neurological level<\/strong> and ASIA grade<\/strong>\u2014those two facts drive nearly every care decision and, later, every life-care projection.<\/p>\n

Can Paraplegics Feel Their Legs?<\/h3>\n

It depends on the injury. Incomplete injuries often leave partial sensation; complete injuries usually do not. Only your loved one’s treating team can explain their specific case\u2014build the care plan around what they say.<\/p>\n
