What is the major difference between quadriplegia and tetraplegia?<\/h2>\n

What is the major difference between quadriplegia and tetraplegia? There is no medical difference.<\/strong> Both words mean the same thing. So the answer is simple. Both words describe paralysis<\/a>, or loss of function, in all four limbs and the torso. This happens when the neck (cervical) part of the spinal cord is hurt.<\/p>\n

Have you seen both terms in a loved one’s medical records? That’s normal. It does not mean two separate diagnoses. Doctors, therapists, and researchers use both words to mean the same thing. The only real difference is the word itself. The condition is the same.<\/p>\n

Quadriplegia and tetraplegia mean exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n

Both words describe loss of movement and feeling. This affects the arms, hands, trunk, legs, and pelvic organs. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) runs one of the Spinal Cord Injury Model System centers. The government chose these centers to follow patients for decades. UAB defines tetraplegia<\/a> as not being able to move the upper and lower body on purpose.<\/p>\n

More doctors and researchers prefer the word tetraplegia today. Quadriplegia is the older, more familiar word. Many people in the United States still use both. Seeing them side by side in a chart is common and correct.<\/p>\n

Why there are two words for the same thing<\/h2>\n

The two words exist because of how older languages built them.<\/p>\n

“Quadriplegia” mixes two language roots. “Quadri” comes from Latin and means “four.” “Plegia” comes from Greek and means “paralysis.” So the word blends Latin and Greek.<\/p>\n

“Tetraplegia” uses matching Greek roots. “Tetra” is Greek for “four.” “Plegia” is Greek for “paralysis.” Both halves come from the same language. So many doctors and rehab experts chose “tetraplegia” as the cleaner, more consistent word.<\/p>\n

So why did tetraplegia start replacing quadriplegia? Mostly for that language match. The meaning did not change. The “new” word for quadriplegia is simply tetraplegia. Both are still widely used. So patients still see them treated as the same thing.<\/p>\n

What quadriplegia and tetraplegia actually affect<\/h2>\n

Quadriplegia affects all four limbs. It causes loss of function below the level of the neck injury.<\/p>\n

The condition can cause loss of movement and feeling. This affects the arms, hands, trunk, legs, and pelvic organs. It happens when the cervical (neck) part of the spinal cord is hurt. The Mayo Clinic<\/a> explains that a spinal cord injury causes loss of function below the point of injury. Higher injuries can affect breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and bladder and bowel control.<\/p>\n
