Chronic vs. acute: why the word “chronic” is confusing here<\/h2>\n

Acute cauda equina syndrome<\/a> (CES) is a surgical emergency. “Chronic” describes the symptoms that stay with a person long after that emergency ends.<\/strong> CES happens when a bundle of nerve roots at the base of the spine gets pressed or damaged. This bundle is called the cauda equina, which is Latin for “horse’s tail.”<\/p>\n
