The Real Number: 94% of Accidents Caused by Driver Error<\/h2>\n

Almost every law-firm blog cites one federal report. It comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The report is called Critical Reasons for Crashes Investigated in the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey<\/em> \u2014 NHTSA Publication DOT HS 812 506<\/a> (February 2015).<\/p>\n

NHTSA investigators assigned each crash a “critical reason” \u2014 the main reason it happened. The driver was the critical reason in 94% of accidents<\/strong>. Vehicle problems caused about 2%. Environmental factors caused about 2%. The rest were unknown.<\/p>\n

So “90%” is simply a rounded-down version of the stronger, provable figure. We cite the real one.<\/p>\n
