What is cauda equina syndrome? (the “horse’s tail” explained)<\/h2>\n

Picture your spinal cord as a thick cable running down the middle of your spine. In most adults that cable ends<\/em> near the top of your lower back \u2014 around the first lumbar vertebra (L1). It does not run all the way to your tailbone.<\/p>\n

Below that point the cord fans out into a loose spray of separate nerve roots that keep traveling down through your lower spine. Early anatomists thought this spray looked like a horse’s tail, so they named it the cauda equina<\/strong> \u2014 Latin for “horse’s tail.”<\/p>\n

These nerves do critical jobs: they let you feel and move your legs, sense when your bladder is full, and control your bowels and sexual function. Cauda equina syndrome happens when something presses hard on that bundle \u2014 a large herniated disc, swelling, a tumor, or trauma from a serious accident \u2014 and squeezes the roots.<\/p>\n
