What is a truck’s “black box”? (And how it differs from a car’s)<\/h2>\n

“Black box” is an everyday term, not a technical one. In a commercial truck, it usually means the engine control module (ECM)<\/strong>. This is a computer built into the engine. It records how the truck was driven. Many trucks also carry an event data recorder (EDR)<\/strong>. This device captures a snapshot of information around a crash.<\/p>\n

Here is the key difference from your personal car. A big rig usually carries several<\/em> data sources, not one. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)<\/a> explains that event data recorders can capture things like a vehicle’s change in velocity (engineers call it delta-V<\/em>), whether the brakes were applied, and seatbelt status around a crash. Under federal rule 49 CFR Part 563<\/a>, passenger-vehicle EDRs that record this data must capture a minimum set of items. Commercial trucks generally hold far more.
