What Does TBSA (Total Body Surface Area) Mean?<\/h2>\n

TBSA is the share of a person’s total skin that a burn has affected, written as a percentage. A 20% TBSA burn means one-fifth of the skin is burned.<\/p>\n

Doctors use a percentage rather than just naming the burned spots because location alone doesn’t tell the full story. A burn covering both legs is far more dangerous than a small burn on one hand. The percentage gives the whole care team one clear, shared number to work from.<\/p>\n

TBSA is one of two measures that matter. The other is burn depth<\/strong> \u2014 how far down into the skin the burn reaches \u2014 which we explain below. Together, size and depth decide how severe the injury is. How Do Doctors Calculate a Total Body Surface Area Burn?<\/h2>\n

Doctors estimate TBSA using standard methods, not guesswork. Three tools are most common: the rule of nines<\/strong>, the Lund and Browder chart<\/strong>, and the palm (rule of palms) method<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Each fits a different moment. Paramedics and ER staff often use the rule of nines for a fast estimate at the scene or on arrival. Adults and children are measured differently. A child’s head is proportionally larger and their legs smaller compared with an adult’s.
