Why the injury doesn’t end at the spinal cord<\/h2>\n

A spinal cord injury changes far more than the ability to move. It changes how the body controls blood pressure, breathing, temperature, bladder, bowel, and skin. Doctors call the problems that follow secondary complications<\/strong>. These are health issues caused by the paralysis itself, not just the original impact.<\/p>\n

Here is why that matters for a claim. The first hospital bills are only the beginning. Some of the biggest costs arrive years after the crash. A pressure injury may need surgery. A lung infection may mean a hospital stay. A power wheelchair must be replaced every five to seven years, for decades.<\/p>\n

The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) keeps the federally funded national SCI database at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It reports that average first-year health-care costs for a person with high tetraplegia can top $1 million<\/strong>. Each year after that can run into the hundreds of thousands. And those numbers leave out lost wages and unpaid family caregiving. That is the gap this page is about.<\/p>\n

What are the complications of paralysis?<\/h2>\n

The most common problems are pressure injuries, urinary tract infections, blood clots, and autonomic dysreflexia. Others include breathing and heart problems, muscle spasms, chronic pain, bone loss, and depression or anxiety. Some need daily management. Others are true medical emergencies.<\/p>\n

Risk and severity depend a lot on where the injury sits. Paraplegia<\/strong> affects the lower body and legs. Quadriplegia<\/strong> (also called tetraplegia<\/a>) affects the arms, trunk, and legs. As a general rule, the higher the injury on the spinal cord, the more body systems it reaches.<\/p>\n

A note on cause:<\/strong> these complications are the same no matter how the paralysis started. It could be an 80,000-pound tractor-trailer. It could be a fall from an unsafe balcony. Autonomic dysreflexia: a medical emergency<\/h2>\n

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a sudden, dangerous spike in blood pressure. It mainly happens with injuries at or above the mid-back (the T6 level<\/strong> and higher). Left untreated, it can cause a seizure, stroke, or death. So it needs fast action.<\/p>\n

AD usually starts when something below the injury irritates the body. It could be a full bladder, a blocked catheter, a skin sore, or even tight clothing. The body responds with a fast rise in blood pressure. Warning signs include a pounding headache, sweating and flushing above the injury, and a slow heartbeat. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation calls AD one of the most urgent risks for people with higher injuries. That’s because the trigger can be as simple as a kinked catheter tube.<\/p>\n

This is a lifelong risk. Family members and caregivers need real training to spot it and respond. Future-cost category:<\/strong> caregiver training, home blood-pressure monitoring equipment, and reliable access to emergency care. These costs come back again and again. They are not one-time costs. Always follow your medical team’s guidance on preventing and treating AD.<\/p>\n

Pressure injuries and skin breakdown<\/h2>\n

Pressure injuries \u2014 once called “pressure sores” or “bedsores” \u2014 are wounds. They form when skin loses blood flow after staying in one position too long. Paralysis takes away feeling. So the person never feels the discomfort that normally makes us shift our weight. The skin breaks down before anyone notices.<\/p>\n

They sound minor. They are not. A deep pressure injury can reach muscle and bone. It can cause a life-threatening infection (sepsis<\/strong>). It may require surgery or a hospital stay of weeks.<\/p>\n

Future-cost category:<\/strong> pressure-relieving mattresses and wheelchair cushions; a repositioning schedule (which often needs paid help overnight); wound-care supplies; and home-health nursing. Each belongs in the claim’s future-care plan. When these needs go undocumented, the family pays out of pocket for the rest of a person’s life.<\/p>\n

Blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)<\/h2>\n

Less movement raises the risk of blood clots. The main one is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)<\/strong> \u2014 a clot in a deep leg vein. When muscles don’t pump, blood pools and can clot. The Mayo Clinic<\/a> lists dangerous blood clots among the circulatory complications of spinal cord injury. The risk is highest in the first weeks after the injury.<\/p>\n

DVT is dangerous because a clot can break loose and travel to the lungs. This is a pulmonary embolism<\/strong>, which can be fatal. Prevention often means blood-thinning medicine, compression devices, and regular ultrasound checks.<\/p>\n

Breathing and cardiovascular complications<\/h2>\n

Higher spinal cord injuries can weaken or paralyze the muscles used to breathe. Some people need a ventilator<\/strong> (a machine that breathes for you) or other breathing support. The Mayo Clinic<\/a> notes that breathing trouble and a higher risk of pneumonia are common after these injuries.<\/p>\n

Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of illness and death for people with paralysis<\/a>. A weak cough makes it hard to clear the lungs, so infections take hold. Paralysis can also disrupt how the body controls blood pressure and heart rate.<\/p>\n

Future-cost category:<\/strong> ventilator or breathing equipment on a set replacement cycle; breathing supplies; skilled in-home care for the ventilator; and heart (cardiology) follow-up. Breathing equipment carries two costs: the replacement cycle and the skilled care it needs. You must plan for both.<\/p>\n

Bladder, bowel, and urinary tract complications<\/h2>\n

Most spinal cord injuries affect bladder and bowel control. The nerves that control these functions travel through the spinal cord. The result is a high risk of repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs)<\/strong>. Over time, kidney damage is possible too.<\/p>\n

Managing this takes daily routines and supplies. That means catheters, medications, and careful monitoring. It also means bowel programs that take time and consistency. These needs affect independence and dignity, not only health.<\/p>\n

Future-cost category:<\/strong> catheters and disposable supplies (a steady expense for decades), medications, regular urology and nephrology (kidney) checks, and hands-on care time. Because the amounts are predictable, this is one of the easiest costs to document in a life care plan.<\/p>\n

Muscle spasticity, chronic pain, and bone density loss<\/h2>\n

Paralysis often brings spasticity<\/strong> \u2014 stiffness or spasms in muscles below the injury that you can’t control. Spasticity can disrupt sleep, sitting, and daily care. It usually needs medication, stretching, and physical therapy.<\/p>\n

Many people also live with chronic pain. This includes neuropathic pain<\/strong> (nerve pain) that standard painkillers don’t fully ease. The Mayo Clinic<\/a> lists both spasticity and pain among spinal cord injury complications.<\/p>\n

Bone below the injury also weakens from less weight-bearing. This raises the risk of fractures from minor bumps.<\/p>\n

Does paralysis go away, and why is it often permanent?<\/h2>\n

Paralysis from a spinal cord injury is often permanent. The spinal cord does not heal the way skin or bone does. Damaged nerve pathways usually cannot regrow and reconnect on their own. That is the honest, general answer. But every case is different.<\/p>\n
