What is second impact syndrome?<\/h2>\n

Second impact syndrome (SIS) is a catastrophic brain reaction. It happens when someone takes a second head injury before healing from a first concussion. According to StatPearls (NIH)<\/a>, it is a condition where a person suffers a second head injury before fully recovering from an earlier one.<\/p>\n

SIS is not a minor concussion. It is a form of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) \u2014 serious, lasting damage to the brain. The first concussion may seem mild. The second blow, even a light one, can set off a chain reaction the brain cannot control.<\/p>\n

Why a second impact is so much more dangerous than the first<\/h2>\n

A second impact is more dangerous because a healing brain loses control of its own blood flow. Doctors call this a loss of cerebral autoregulation. In plain terms, the brain can no longer manage how much blood reaches it.<\/p>\n
