As the wound closes, the damaged nerves don’t necessarily heal on the same schedule as your skin \u2014 they can stay injured and keep firing.<\/p>\n

The Mayo Clinic<\/a> notes that deep burns can cause scarring and that damaged nerves can leave lasting itching, numbness, or altered sensation. In other words: the wound closing and the pain stopping are two different events. One can happen without the other.<\/p>\n

What Is Neuropathic Pain After a Burn?<\/h2>\n

Neuropathic pain is pain that comes from the damaged nerves themselves, not from an open wound. The nerve “wiring” is injured and keeps firing pain signals. The wound may be closed, but the nerve is still broken.<\/p>\n

The American Burn Association<\/a> and burn-rehabilitation specialists describe neuropathic pain as burning, tingling, stabbing, electric-shock, or pins-and-needles sensations. Clinicians generally distinguish acute pain<\/strong> (the pain you feel while wounds heal) from chronic pain<\/strong>, which is commonly defined as pain persisting after wounds have healed \u2014 often described as lasting six months or more.<\/p>\n

Here’s the paradox many survivors search for at 2 a.m.: a burn area can look healed \u2014 or even feel numb \u2014 and still hurt. Numbness and pain can live in the same spot, because different nerve fibers are damaged in different ways. That’s real. It doesn’t mean you’re getting worse.<\/p>\n
