It may be paraplegia or quadriplegia. Maybe you are reading this in a hospital waiting room. Or late at night. You are trying to understand words the doctors said quickly. This guide is written for that moment.

Here it is in plain terms. Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower half of the body. It includes both legs. Quadriplegia (also called tetraplegia) is paralysis that affects all four limbs. It usually affects the trunk, too. Both most often come from a serious spinal cord injury.

This page covers only catastrophic spinal cord and back/neck injuries. These are injuries that cause permanent paralysis or other life-changing harm. It does not cover minor strains, whiplash, or short-term back and neck pain. Families in this situation do not need to read about those.

Every medical statement below comes from a trusted source. We rely mainly on the Mayo Clinic and the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA). We do not copy from other law firms. This is general education. It is not medical or legal advice about your case. For that, you need your treating doctors. And if someone else caused the injury, you need a lawyer.

How the spinal cord injury level shapes everything

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves. It runs down your back inside the spine. It carries signals between the brain and the body. When it is damaged, those signals stop. They no longer reach the parts of the body below the injury.

Two facts about the injury drive almost everything else. First, where the damage is on the cord. Second, how complete it is. Doctors describe the location using spinal regions, from the neck down:

Cervical (neck) — the highest section; injuries here affect the most of the body

Thoracic (mid-back)

Lumbar (lower back)

Sacral (pelvic)

The higher the injury, the more of the body loses function. This is the most important idea. It explains the difference between paraplegia and quadriplegia.

What paraplegia means

Paraplegia is paralysis of the lower half of the body. This includes both legs. The arms and hands usually keep working. It comes from injury to the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. These are the lower parts of the spinal cord.

The higher the injury sits in this range, the more of the trunk it may affect. Paraplegia can also change bladder, bowel, and sexual function. The word “paraplegia” by itself does not tell you how severe things are. The injury level matters. So does how complete it is.

What quadriplegia (tetraplegia) means

Quadriplegia affects all four limbs. It usually affects the trunk, too. It comes from injury to the cervical spine—the neck. This is where the highest and most vital part of the spinal cord sits.

A neck injury cuts off signals to a larger area. So quadriplegia affects the arms and hands, not just the legs. A very high neck injury can also affect breathing. The Mayo Clinic notes that people with high neck injuries may need help breathing. This can include a ventilator (a machine that helps you breathe). That is one reason neck injuries are medical emergencies.

Paraplegia vs. quadriplegia at a glance

Stressed families need fast answers. Here is a side-by-side look at the general patterns:

Paraplegia

Quadriplegia (Tetraplegia)

Body affected

Lower body and both legs

All four limbs and trunk

Spine region injured

Thoracic, lumbar, or sacral (lower spine)

Cervical (neck)

Arm/hand function

Usually preserved

Often reduced or lost

Breathing

Usually not affected

May be affected in high injuries

Typical daily-care needs

Often more independence in upper-body tasks

Often greater assistance needed

These are general patterns. They are not a prediction for any one person. Two people with the same diagnosis can have very different outcomes.

Complete vs. incomplete: why this word matters

Location is one part. Doctors also label an injury as complete or incomplete. The Mayo Clinic explains it this way. A complete injury means all movement (motor) and feeling (sensory) is lost below the injury level. An incomplete injury means some movement or feeling remains below it.

Doctors do not guess at this. They use the ISNCSCI exam. That stands for International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury. They also use the ASIA Impairment Scale (AIS). Both were created by the American Spinal Injury Association. The AIS grades an injury from A to E. Grade A means complete—no movement or feeling in the lowest sacral segments. Grade E means normal function. Trained clinicians use this exam to grade the injury. It helps guide treatment and rehab.

You may hear a doctor say “ASIA A” or “AIS C.” They are talking about this scale. Ask your medical team which grade applies. Ask what it means for your family member. This is one of the most useful questions you can ask.

Questions families ask most about paralysis

The honest answer to most of these is the same. It depends on the injury level. It also depends on whether the injury is complete or incomplete. No one can promise a specific recovery.

Can a complete paraplegic walk again? With a truly complete injury, walking again is not medically expected. No signals reach the muscles below the injury. With an incomplete injury, some people regain movement. But results vary widely. Only treating doctors can judge a real chance for one person.

Can a quadriplegic move their arms? It depends on where the neck is injured. A lower neck injury may leave some arm and hand function. A higher one usually affects the arms more.

Can paraplegics feel their legs? Often no, but it varies. A complete injury removes feeling below the injury level. An incomplete injury may leave some feeling.

For any real prognosis, rely on the treating medical team. They examine the patient directly. They track changes over time. No website can do that.

Common causes of catastrophic spinal cord injuries

Most catastrophic spinal cord injuries come from sudden trauma. The Mayo Clinic lists the leading causes:

Motor vehicle crashes, including car and truck collisions

Falls, especially from height or among older adults

Acts of violence, including gunshot wounds

Sports and recreation injuries, such as diving into shallow water

Medical negligence can also cause permanent paralysis. Here are some examples. A surgical error. A delayed or missed diagnosis of a spinal condition. An anesthesia mistake that cuts off blood or oxygen to the cord. In the catastrophic cases our attorneys handle, the harm is usually permanent and life-changing.

Care, treatment, and the real long-term costs

Care usually begins with emergency care to protect the spine. Sometimes surgery follows. It can relieve pressure or hold the spine in place. Then comes rehabilitation. This can last months or years.

Long-term needs are often large. They can include wheelchairs, breathing support, and home changes. Home changes include ramps, wider doorways, and accessible bathrooms. They also include ongoing therapy and daily personal care.

The financial weight is real and lasting. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) tracks U.S. data. This includes injury causes, demographics, and the estimated lifetime costs of care. Those costs run into the millions of dollars. The amount depends on the injury level and the person’s age at injury. The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation also publishes data. It shows how many Americans live with paralysis. We point families to these sources. That way you can check the numbers yourself. You do not have to take any single firm’s word for them.

When paralysis results from someone else’s negligence

Sometimes someone else’s carelessness caused the injury. This could be a crash, an unsafe property, or a medical mistake. If so, the injured person may have a legal claim. A claim may seek money for medical bills, future care, lost income, and the impact on daily life. We cannot promise any result. Every case turns on its own facts and evidence.

CHG Personal Injury Lawyers is a Florida-based firm. Our attorneys are licensed and admitted to the Florida Bar. We handle catastrophic spinal injury cases nationwide. The Florida Bar publishes consumer guides on working with a lawyer. Stat. §95.11, most negligence claims must generally be filed within two years. This applies to injuries on or after March 24, 2023. Other states have different rules and deadlines.

Shared fault. Under Fla. Stat. §768.81, Florida uses modified comparative negligence. This means fault can be shared. A person found more than 50% at fault generally cannot recover damages. And any recovery is reduced by the injured person’s own share of fault.

Deadlines can pass quickly. Evidence can disappear. So it helps to ask questions early.

Talk to us in your language

Understanding a paralysis diagnosis is a hard first step. This can cause permanent loss of movement and feeling.
</details><details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I bring a claim if I was paralyzed by a violent attack at an apartment or business?

Yes—you may have a claim. That means things like working locks, lighting, cameras, or guards. In that case, you may have a claim against that property owner. This type of case is known as negligent security. A lawyer can review whether the owner’s failures added to your harm.
</details><details class="wp-block-details chg-faq is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What compensation can be sought in a paralysis case?

A paralysis claim may seek money for several things.
