What nerve damage after a spinal injury means<\/h2>\n

Your spinal cord is a bundle of nerve fibers. It links your brain to nerves all over your body. Think of it as the body’s main cable.<\/p>\n

A serious accident can bruise, squeeze, or tear that cable. When the nerve fibers are damaged, signals that used to flow freely get blocked or scrambled.<\/p>\n

This is why one injury can cause two very different problems at once. Some signals never arrive. So you lose movement and feeling. Other signals fire wrongly. So you feel strange or severe pain.<\/p>\n

Complete vs. incomplete spinal cord injuries<\/h2>\n

The key difference is whether any signals still pass below the injury.<\/p>\n

In a complete<\/strong> injury, no signal gets through. You lose all movement and feeling below that point. In an incomplete<\/strong> injury, some signals still pass. So some movement or feeling may remain.<\/p>\n

Doctors don’t guess at this. They use a standard exam called the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI)<\/strong>. It was published by the American Spinal Injury Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The exam gives an ASIA Impairment Scale grade. It runs from A<\/strong> (complete \u2014 no movement or feeling below the injury) to E<\/strong> (normal). If you see letters like “AIS C” in medical records, that is this scale. It tells the care team how complete the injury is. It also shows the lowest spinal level that still works normally.<\/p>\n

That level<\/strong> matters. A cervical (neck) injury can affect the arms, hands, trunk, and legs. A thoracic (mid-back) or lumbar (lower-back) injury usually affects the legs and lower body. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC)<\/a>, incomplete tetraplegia<\/a> is the most common type of new injury.<\/p>\n
