What is central cord syndrome?<\/h2>\n

Central cord syndrome (CCS) is an incomplete<\/strong> spinal cord injury in the neck. \u201cIncomplete\u201d means some signals still travel through the cord, so some feeling or movement remains below the injury. That\u2019s different from a complete injury, where signals stop entirely.<\/p>\n

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation<\/a> describes CCS as the most common form of incomplete spinal cord injury. It gets its name because the damage sits in the center of the cervical (neck) spinal cord.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the part almost no one explains clearly \u2014 why the hands take the worst of it. Inside the spinal cord, the nerve fibers are laid out in a specific order. The fibers that control your arms and hands run closer to the center<\/strong> of the cord. The fibers for your legs sit farther toward the outer edge. When the core of the cord is bruised or squeezed, the arm and hand fibers get hit hardest, while the leg fibers \u2014 sitting on the outside \u2014 are often partly spared. That layout is why so many people with CCS can walk but can\u2019t grip, write, or fasten a button.<\/p>\n

How hyperextension causes central cord syndrome<\/h2>\n

Hyperextension is the leading mechanism. It simply means your head snaps backward, past its normal range \u2014 chin flying up, the back of the head heading toward the shoulders. In that split second, the cord can get pinched or bruised against the bones and ligaments of the neck. The damage is worst where the spinal canal \u2014 the bony tunnel around the cord \u2014 is already narrow.<\/p>\n
