What Mesothelioma Is and Who It Affects<\/h2>\n

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer. It forms in the thin membranes that cover the lungs, chest or abdomen.<\/p>\n

Membranes are thin layers of tissue. They line and cover organs.<\/p>\n

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry<\/a> describes it as an asbestos-related cancer.<\/p>\n

Asbestos is a mineral fiber. It was once used in many building and industrial products.<\/p>\n

People usually breathe in or swallow its fibers. The fibers can lodge in the lining of the body. They can stay there for years.<\/p>\n

The disease often appears decades later. The federal asbestos standard<\/a> notes that mesothelioma has a much longer average latency period than lung cancer.<\/p>\n

The average gap is about 40 years. For lung cancer, it is 15 to 20 years.<\/p>\n

A “latency period” is the time between exposure and the first signs of disease. This long gap is one reason people are surprised to learn the cause.<\/p>\n

Exposure is often tied to past work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration<\/a> notes that work-related asbestos exposure raises the risk of mesothelioma and lung cancer.<\/p>\n

These diseases have a delayed onset. They show up long after the exposure.<\/p>\n

Construction, shipyard and industrial workers are common examples. Family members can also be exposed. Dust can be carried home on work clothing.<\/p>\n
